More than 800,000 Kenyans have registered on the Boma Yangu website, a government portal designed to facilitate access to affordable housing units across the country. This is according to data shared from the platform at the close of June, 2025. The platform allows users to register, select a home unit and save up towards owning it, under the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP), which is a key pillar of the Government’s Housing Agenda. This increase in registrations highlights the growing interest among Kenyans in homeownership and their support of the overall government plan to provide them decent and affordable housing units across the country. According to data obtained from the Affordable Housing Board (AHB), the program has taken shape across the country, with the construction of more than 140,000 housing units currently underway in 44 of the 47 counties. So far, 3,171 homes have been completed, with over 11,000 units nearing completion. Speaking recently at a Diaspora Stakeholder Meeting held in Nairobi, Principal Secretary, State Department for Housing and Urban Development, Charles Hinga, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that every Kenyan, regardless of income level, has a chance to own a home under the programme. “It is not just about housing; it is about building dignity, providing opportunities, and enhancing national development. I call upon Kenyans to take up this initiative towards owning a decent, affordable home through the Boma Yangu platform www.bomayangu.go.ke,” said Hinga. The Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) has generated over 250,000 jobs in both the formal and informal sectors. Through this initiative, the government has allocated KSh 11 billion to support MSMEs and Jua Kali artisans who are actively contributing to the construction efforts. The program also includes 42,000 housing units for the uniformed force, including the Kenya Police, the Kenya Defence Forces, and the Kenya Prisons staff. Additionally, a proposal to construct 177,000 student housing units is currently in the procurement phase. As construction progresses, the government is encouraging more Kenyans to register on the Boma Yangu platform and take the first step toward owning a home.
