KISUMU, August 2 Kabras Sugar 7s are champions of the Dala 7s once again, after erasing a five-point halftime deficit to beat Menengai Oilers 19-5 in Sunday’s final and reclaim top spot on the SportPesa National Sevens Circuit standings.
The Sugar Millers trailed 0-5 at the break, the exact position they found themselves in twelve months ago when KCB denied them the trophy on the same ground. This time the ending was different.
Derrick Ashihundu opened Kabras’ second-half account to draw the sides level. Rayvon Ambale, the tournament’s Series MVP, then scored and converted his own try to nose Kabras ahead, before Fredrick Wangila crossed for a third try, converted by Michael Lukusi, to put the result beyond doubt.
“We are very happy to have won here in Kisumu,” said Kabras captain Mathias Osimbo after the final whistle. “We came too short in Nakuru, losing in the final, but we knew we had it in us to win here and we couldn’t be more pleased.”
Third place went the way of Mwamba 7s, who needed extra time to see off Kenya Harlequins 22-17 after the sides finished level at 17-17 in normal time. Mwamba captain Shaquel Bosire scored the decisive try.
Harlequins had earlier eliminated defending champions KCB in the quarter-finals the standout shock of the weekend. KCB, unbeaten in Prinsloo Sevens before Dala, had already shown signs of vulnerability with a 19-19 pool draw against MMUST. They finished the tournament in 5th, beating Strathmore 24-17.
In the women’s competition, Mwamba Ladies retained their Division One title, beating Kenya Harlequins 10-7 with a try in the final minute to claim back-to-back titles and KES 100,000 in prize money.
SportPesa Head of Public Relations Willis Ojwang said the weekend had lived up to its billing. “Dala has given us exactly the kind of rugby this circuit was built for physical, unpredictable, and full of statements,” he said, adding that the strong showings from Harlequins and MMUST were “a good sign for the rest of the series.”
At the Impala Club, Catholic Monks won promotion to Division 1 with a 20-14 win over Stallions in the Division 2 final, earning KES 70,000, while Stallions took KES 30,000 as runners-up.
The circuit resumes in two weeks with Leg 3, the Kabeberi Memorial Sevens, at the Impala Club on 15–16 August.
